SEATTLE, USA – Australian Supercross star Chad Reed will take a 10 point lead into next weekend’s World Championship Supercross finale, after finishing second tonight at the penultimate round of the 2008 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series at Seattle’s Qwest Field.
Reed posted the fastest qualifying time before going on to win his heat race, despite still carrying a serious shoulder injury into the event.
The Team San Manuel Yamaha rider, who came into tonight’s race with a 13 point lead, collided with Davi Millsaps while dicing for the holeshot and in turn started the race 10 seconds behind and in last place.
In true Reed style, he charged his way through the field and it was not long before he was sitting third behind Andrew Short.
The Honda rider rode extremely defensively in an attempt to deny Reed an opportunity to mount an attack on Short’s team mate Kevin Windham for the win. As Reed made his move, Short turned hard into him and the two collided heavily. The Australian held on to execute the pass and maintain a championship lead of 10 points over Windham going into the final round.
The result was also his 12th podium finish this season and increased his AMA Supercross career podium finish count to an amazing 85.
“In the first turn, I crashed into the back wheel of Davi Millsaps’ bike and fell down,” said Reed.
“When I was coming through the pack, I saw a bunch of Honda bikes and knew I was outnumbered.”
“It was absolutely wild out there tonight, the track was the rockiest I have seen in a long time and the racing was just vicious with people taking each other out everywhere. The hardest part about coming through the pack was avoiding other people’s collisions.”
“I am still not riding at my best as the shoulder is still very sore but I am looking forward to Las Vegas. I should have finished the job by now but I am pumped that the championship has come down to the wire – next weekend’s event is going to be exciting,” Reed claimed.
The final installment of the 17 round 2008 Monster Energy Drink AMA Supercross Series, an FIM World Championship will take place on Saturday 3rd May at the Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas.
